A Journey Across Borders: From Andalusia to the Edge of the Moroccan Desert

Spain, located on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, consists of 17 autonomous regions with diverse geography and cultures. Andalusia, covering the entire southern area of mainland Spain, is known for its beautiful beaches, charming whitewashed villages, and world-class golf courses. With its varied terrain and vegetation, including mountain ranges and forests at high elevations, Andalusia offers a unique and diverse landscape. The region boasts a Mediterranean climate, with plenty of sunshine throughout the year, making it a popular tourist destination. Andalusia is famous for its art, including the birthplace of Picasso in Malaga, as well as its mountain villages and sandy coastline.

While most tourists visit the cities of Seville, Granada, and Marbella for tapas and flamenco dancing, Andalusia has much more to offer beyond these well-known destinations. It is home to the only desert in Europe, offering thrilling hiking trails like the suspended walkway along the walls of El Chorro gorge in Malaga. Andalusia is also a paradise for food lovers, with a variety of options ranging from street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants. Specialties vary across the region, with tapas being a mainstay in cities like Seville, Granada, Cádiz, and Córdoba, while fresh seafood is best enjoyed at seafront chiringuito restaurants.

Andalusia is not only known for its scenic beauty and culinary delights but also for being the birthplace of flamenco, the passionate and fiery dance. Visitors can experience the soulful flamenco bars in Seville’s Triana district and Granada’s Peña la Platería. The region also offers vibrant nightlife, with dive bars, live-music venues, and clubs. Additionally, Andalusia boasts a stunning coastline that stretches over 497 miles, offering perfect beaches like Playa de Bolonia or El Palmar for every beach lover. Other popular attractions include The Alhambra Palace in Granada, Córdoba’s Great Mosque, and The Puente Nuevo in Ronda.

Just an hour away, by ferry from Tarifa to Tangier, travelers can explore the beauty of northern Morocco. Located on a bay of the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is a bustling city and the gateway to Africa. It is home to the largest port in the country and offers road and rail connections to major Moroccan cities like Fès, Meknès, Rabat, and Casablanca.

Similar to Andalusia, Tangier showcases a blend of Hispano-Moorish architecture, white colonial-era buildings, and European-style squares. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Tangier Medina, the city’s old quarter, and explore its narrow alleys and bustling souks filled with artisan goods and fresh fruits. Tangier also offers stretches of white sandy beaches for relaxation or water sports activities such as water skiing, sailing, and scuba diving. With a major regeneration, the waterfront now features a modern marina and wide boulevards lined with palm trees. Adventurous travelers can venture into the hinterland and enjoy hiking in the Rifan Reliefs. Golf enthusiasts will also find Morocco’s first golf course in Tangier, founded in 1914 and designed by Cotton and Pennink.

Tangier has a rich artistic history and has attracted renowned writers like Paul Bowles, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs, putting the city on the map. Today, Tangier has transformed into a modern and contemporary city while still retaining its thriving café culture and vibrant nightlife influenced by the Beat generation and counterculture. Some hidden gems in Tangier include The Bay of Tangier, Tangier Medina, Playa Blanca, The Caves of Hercules, and the Church of Saint Andrew.
