Chef David Slay has brought the flavors of the Mediterranean and France to the South Bay with his new French/Mediterranean inspired bistro known as Fete a Bistro by Slay, located in Manhattan Beach.
Slay, a third-generation American restaurateur, is renowned for creating outstanding dishes at award-winning restaurants. He began his training in his father’s kitchen when he was just 11 years old. Later, at 17, Slay apprenticed with classically trained European chefs in Las Vegas. By the time he was 20, he opened his first restaurant, a 26-seat French café with no liquor license because he was underage.
Slay’s restaurants, including Park Ave Dining and Il Garage Ristorante in Orange County, are consistently among the top-rated restaurants in Zagat and have been recognized by the Orange County Register and the Beat of LA by LA Magazine.
Before the pandemic, Slay expanded his empire in the South Bay with SLAY Steak & Fish, SLAY Italian Kitchen in MB, and SLAY Hermosa in 2022. SLAY Hermosa is nestled on Hermosa Ave. and offers beautiful rooftop views of the ocean and delicious California Coastal cuisine.
Alongside prominent restauranteurs Chef David LeFevre and The Simms brothers, and Michael Zislus, Chef Slay and his restaurant offerings provide something for everyone, except for perhaps an Asian option.
Featuring fantastic options, Fete’ provides mouth-watering Mediterranean dishes such as hummus with crudités and warm freshly baked pita, French Onion Soup Gratin, Steak Tartare, and French baguette. If they have the off-menu stone crab claws, don’t hesitate to try them! The Scallop St Jaques is delicate, delicious, and artfully served atop its own shell.
While the baguette is fantastic, it seems strange to have to pay for pita with hummus or for bread in a French restaurant. Chef owner David Slay may want to reconsider this policy. Guests would appreciate if the bistro could offer smaller-sized baguettes and pita with the hummus as an option.
For entrees, the salmon, duck al’ orange, steak frites, shrimp kebabs, and the lamb shank are all magical and delicious. The steak is even better than at the award-winning SLAY Steak, and Fete’ also offers superb French desserts.
The bar offers various specialty cocktails, a wide selection of top-shelf spirits, and a nice wine list. Chef Slay even features wine from his California winery for wine enthusiasts.
If you’re searching for delicious French and Mediterranean cuisine, make a reservation at Fete’ in Manhattan Beach. You won’t be disappointed.
