A new high-end yacht named Evolve has been added to Ecoventura’s fleet, further solidifying its position as a renowned leader in environmentally-friendly cruise travel. This vessel is the lone Galapagos ship to be included in the esteemed Relais & Chateaux collection.
During a recent dinner event in Los Angeles, Santiago Dunn, the CEO of Ecoventura, emphasized the appeal of smaller expedition voyages for cruise enthusiasts. Dunn stated, “Positive feedback from travelers and a rising demand for personalized, upscale experiences on board Origin and Theory prompted us to introduce our third luxury vessel, Evolve.” He added, “With Evolve, we persist in merging luxury and sustainability while granting exclusive access to some of the most awe-inspiring locations within the archipelago.”
Dunn, who comes from Guayaquil and has a background in finance from Boston College and a Master’s degree from Concordia University in Montreal, is an active member of the Charles Darwin Foundation and Ecuador’s National Council of the WWF.
Compared to larger expedition cruise companies, these smaller ships – Origin, Theory, and now Evolve – have a lesser impact on the local environment. Each vessel is staffed with one concierge and two guides to cater to a maximum of 20 passengers.
The 142-foot mega-yacht is designed for elegance, efficiency, and stability. Its gracefully curved bow enables smoother sailing through waves.
The interiors of the yacht are bathed in natural light and boast a stylish lounge where guests can unwind with a good book or attend evening briefings and educational talks hosted by naturalists.
Departures take place every Sunday for two immersive and exclusive 7-night itineraries, namely Volcanic Wonders highlighting various sites in the Northern and Western regions of the Galapagos National Park, and Beaches and Bays journeying through the South and along the Central route. Both itineraries offer up-close encounters with land and marine wildlife. Naturalists onboard enlighten passengers about the endemic species in the archipelago.
Activities include cliff hiking, snorkeling, and swimming with native turtles, sea lions, unique marine iguanas, and possibly even penguins. Dunn recounted an amusing incident during dinner where he found out that a penguin had hitched a ride on his back while snorkeling, leading to a frantic swim back to the ship. Such wildlife encounters are among the many captivating stories shared by Dunn.
Guests can savor meals on the sundeck or in the cozy dining room featuring a menu curated from locally sourced ingredients. They can opt for local dishes or enjoy a grilled lunch on deck al fresco. In the evenings, the culinary team prepares a lavish four-course dinner that meets Relais & Chateaux standards.
The sundeck provides a stunning view of the islands, with guests relaxing on chaise lounges or plush daybeds. To cool off after snorkeling, an outdoor shower is available, while a deck hot tub offers a perfect spot to cherish a sunset while sipping champagne.
The sophisticated staterooms feature memory foam mattresses, luxury linens, and plush pillows. Bathrooms are equipped with walk-in showers and premium bath amenities.
A small library and games shelf provide entertainment options for guests in the evenings. The onboard gym is outfitted with cardio equipment and yoga mats, allowing guests to stretch outdoors on the deck in the warm fresh air.
Ecoventura has recently taken significant steps toward sustainability. Each cabin includes reusable water bottles to minimize plastic waste. The staff now collects plastic, glass, and cardboard onboard, flying it from San Cristobal to Guayaquil for recycling instead of leaving it to be processed in the Galapagos.
In its over 30 years of operation in the Galapagos, Ecoventura has supported various organizations dedicated to preserving the unique ecosystem, such as the Charles Darwin Foundation. The company also conducts ‘Pack with a Purpose’ initiatives, raising funds for community projects and encouraging travelers to bring educational supplies for donation to local schools.
Ecoventura cruise rates start below $10,000 per person and cover transfers between the airport and dock in the islands. The package includes all meals, snacks, beverages including wine and spirits, and special social gatherings with the Captain. Guided shore excursions, snorkeling gear, glass-bottom boat tours, stand-up paddle boards, and sea kayaks are provided. The ships offer satellite WiFiLuxury. Chartering one of the boats for 20 people starts at $179,000. Rates are currently available until 2024.
