Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, renowned chefs who have been honored with James Beard and Julia Child awards, have inaugurated their new dining establishment Alice B. in the picturesque city of Palm Springs.
The culinary pair’s latest venture can be found within the Living Out LGBTQ+ retirement community in the vibrant heart of Palm Springs. Having previously established popular eateries like City and Border Grill restaurants, authored numerous cookbooks, and hosted a show on the Food Network, Susan and Mary have now introduced Alice B. as part of their Mundo Hospitality Group legacy. This establishment is renowned for its dynamic flavors, sustainably-sourced ingredients, welcoming service, and successful ventures such as Border Grill Trucks, SOCALO, BBQ Mexicana, and Pacha Mamas. In recognition of their culinary prowess and innovative contributions to Southern California cuisine, the chefs were bestowed with the prestigious Gold Award by the Los Angeles Times in 2018.
The restaurant draws inspiration from the life partner of writer Gertrude Stein, and inside, guests will find a captivating portrait of the couple painted by renowned British-American artist Jo Hay.
“Alice B. marks a fresh chapter for us, a divergence from our traditional Mexican and Latin-inspired creations, and a return to our culinary origins. Susan and I received our training in classic French cuisine but draw inspiration from culinary influences around the globe. We are thrilled to introduce Palm Springs to our interpretation of delectable California-infused dishes that speak volumes through their ingredients. Hospitality is our forte, and we are eager to cater to the dining community in Palm Springs,” expressed Milliken.
During our dinner experience, Chef Feniger graciously paused for a conversation and revealed that Alice B.’s highly-anticipated brunch service would commence the next morning. She divulged details of the brunch menu, which boasts an array of savory and sweet offerings including breakfast biscuit sandwiches, challah French Toast, smoked salmon bagels, a breakfast grain veggie bowl, spring vegetable frittata, chopped Cobb salad, and a mouthwatering burger.
Guests can opt for outdoor seating on the cozy patio, inside the stylish dining area, or at the expansive bar that features a delightful piano ambiance. The interior design channels the essence of Palm Springs’ mid-century modern aesthetic, complete with elegant chandeliers, a soothing beige and blue color palette, circular chairs paired with sleek tables, and a collection of local artworks.
Alice B. presents a fusion of Southern California, French, and Mediterranean-inspired flavors. Culinary direction is a collaborative effort between Feniger, Milliken, and Executive Chef Lance Velasquez, a distinguished talent named as a “Rising Star Chef” by Esquire and featured among the “Ten Best New American Chefs” by Food & Wine Magazine. The menu showcases globally-influenced California cuisine.
The gastronomic offerings include delightful cornmeal cheddar drop biscuits with honey, yellowtail crudo, a zesty carrot and ginger soup, and a standout appetizer of crispy gold potato croquettes with smoked ham.
Main courses feature a roasted cauliflower wedge, creamy grits with chanterelles, branzino complemented by celery root remoulade, chicken cutlet served with an apple radish pomegranate salad, Steak Diane, and succulent pork shoulder. Side dishes comprise charred broccolini, crispy smashed potatoes, and sautéed sugar snap peas.
A tempting selection of desserts awaits, including an apple gratin, tahini ice cream served with chocolate sauce, and a luscious salted caramel pot de crème.
Patrons can also savor a variety of signature and classic cocktails, such as the refreshing spirit-free citrus mint spritz and the invigorating ginger hibiscus sparkler, both guaranteed to tantalize the taste buds.
Our visit included a delightful sampling of the main dining menu. The bar menu features comforting options like cream of tomato soup, marinated olives, a chilled wedge salad, baked macaroni, grilled cheese sandwich, cornmeal cheddar biscuits, and smashed potatoes.
“Crafting welcoming dining spaces that foster connections through food has always been our passion. Mary Sue and I have cherished our time in Palm Springs with family and friends, drawing inspiration from the area’s vibrant spirit,” shared Feniger. “We envision this establishment as a haven for guests to relax, relish delectable fare and beverages in the company of loved ones. What adds a special touch is that this restaurant pays homage to the love shared between Alice B. and Gertrude Stein, enveloping visitors in their profound connection from the moment they step in, offering a glimpse into their extraordinary journey together. Our aspiration is for Alice B. to feel like a second home you’ll keep yearning to return to.”
