Maine Hotel Honors Its Rich Shipbuilding Heritage

The Cambria Portland Downtown – Old Port hotel has been generating excitement ever since it opened in the historic Old Port area of Portland. This area has a long history of foundries and shipbuilding.

The six-story boutique hotel, which opened last fall, offers a range of 102 rooms, including standard rooms, luxurious suites, and pet-friendly options. If you’re planning to bring your furry friend along, make sure to inform the hotel in advance.

Situated in the bustling Old Port section of downtown Portland, right next to Shipyard Brewing Company, this hotel provides guests with modern amenities. Upon arrival, friendly valet attendants will guide guests to the fourth floor for check-in.

During check-in, the front desk staff will inquire if you would like to receive room service during your stay, and they will note your preference in your profile.

There is a small area next to the reception desk where you can purchase essential snacks and beverages.

In the afternoons, guests can enjoy complimentary cookies in the lobby.

The hotel provides free wifi for all guests, and the tech-friendly rooms are equipped with Bluetooth mirrors in the spa-inspired bathrooms.

In our spacious pet-friendly room, we found a king-sized bed, a large desk, and a coffee station. There was also a comfortable lounger near the window for relaxation.

A striking mural on the wall behind the bed pays homage to the area’s shipbuilding history.

The hotel’s in-house restaurant, ALTO Terrace Bar + Kitchen, serves breakfast and dinner daily.

On the fourth floor, you’ll discover an industrial-chic space with a massive sliding barn door that leads to a smaller room available for private events.

When dining at the restaurant, be sure to try the local Maine mussels, served in a delicious tomato, chorizo, shallot, wine, and garlic broth. For main course options, the pan-seared scallops on creamy risotto with asparagus tips, blistered tomatoes, and shaved parmesan are a satisfying choice. The grilled swordfish steak is simply prepared with lobster and herb compound butter, accompanied by rice pilaf and haricot verts.

Portland is a pedestrian-friendly city that can easily be explored on foot. Start or end your visit with a stop at Shipyard Brewing Company, located beside the hotel. They offer a range of brews, including classic American Pale Ale and seasonal favorites like Summer and Pumpkinhead Ales.

You can find The Cambria Portland Downtown – Old Port at 25 Hancock Street in Portland, Maine.
