Dalita and Duncan Harmon have always had a love for wine. In 2019, the mother and son decided to turn their passion into a family business. They settled in Santa Barbara County, home to some of the best vineyards in the world, and launched their own wine label called Terre et Sang.
Their goal was to create site-driven Syrah and Grenache wines. Duncan initially started by making a small amount of wine from lesser-known vineyards and from a small plot in his mother’s backyard. When the wine turned out exceptionally well, the duo set their sights higher and approached renowned sites like Larner, Bien Nacido, and Kimsey for grapes.
“We brought samples of what we had made and explained how we wanted to partner with them and what we wanted to achieve,” Duncan said. “We were shocked and so grateful when they said yes.”
With a strong commitment to detail, the Harmons wanted their wines to reflect their hard work, honesty, and the collective effort put into making each wine at the highest level. Now, after producing a few vintages, the Harmons have opened Terre et Sang On Grand in the heart of Los Olivos. It serves as a tasting space and showcase for their distinct wines, which have quickly gained a cult following. The historic residence, dating back to 1905, has been updated with the Harmons’ own modernist flair and features a relaxing garden area shaded by olive trees.
“I want people to be excited about what we are doing,” Duncan added. “I want people to fall in love with the wine and the product, the vision, the story, the approach.”
The Terre et Sang wines are produced in limited quantities, highly sought after, and have received critical acclaim. The wine selection includes Kissing Vipers Bien Nacido Grenache, Leave it to the Birds Peake Ranch Grenache, The Patriarch Larner Vineyard Syrah, Passenger Syrah, The Shadow Bien Nacido Syrah, and X Block Bien Nacido Syrah. These vineyards are all located within the Santa Maria Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, and Santa Barbara County appellations.
